10 weeks at the gym

My exercise for the past couple years has been playing three to four games of racquetball three times a week; playing a couple hours of Ultimate two to three times a week; and an occasional 15- or 20-mile bike ride (when the weather cooperates).

But this week, I just started going to a gym on Saturday. I’m planning to go three times a week for 10 weeks. The first day was just orientation, but I have so little upper body strength and do so little with weights that I did get a sore from orientation. Here’s the workout from my second day, which was today:

Do as many reps as possible in 15 min.:
• 40 air squats
• 30 sit-ups
• 20 push-ups
• 10 pull-ups

… and here’s what I managed:
• 109 air squats
• 60 sit-ups
• 40 push-ups (from knees)
• 20 pull-ups (assisted)

That was enough to make me lightheaded and I imagine I’ll be quite a bit more sore tomorrow than I already am.

Ethnic Christmases

Since 1999, my family has been making food from a different country or region for our Christmas dinner instead of having similar meals for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. This year, we put our heads together to make a list of what we had each year, and this is what we came up with. It’s pretty close but we might be off a little. Some dishes we tried are included when we could remember some.

Vacation: Turkey

Julie and I went to Istanbul, Turkey, for about 11 days, from the evening of June 19 to early in the morning July 2. We stayed with our friend Sean in the Şişli neighborhood.

We toured some historic sights like the Aya Sofia, Chora Church, Topkapi Palace, and the Basilica Cistern. We rented a boat and went up the Bosphorus one afternoon, swimming and hanging out. We walked through the Grand Bazaar and shopped in the Spice Bazaar a little bit. We took a ferry to the Asian side of the city and had dinner and drinks there. We played board games and danced at a gay bar and watched a couple of the Euro2012 soccer games.

I played Ultimate twice; one pickup game, one team practice (Turk Kasi).

Swedish Christmas

Continuing my family’s 12-year tradition of having a different ethnic or regional or country’s cuisine for Christmas, this year we tried making a variety of Swedish food.
Let’s see if I can recall most of what we tried:

  • Crepes with whipped cream and lingonberries
  • Waffles with whipped cream and lingonberries
  • Beet salad
  • Herring salad
  • Perch baked with eggs
  • Salmon pudding
  • Fried herring
  • Saffron bread
  • Herring in a paprika sauce
  • Boiled potatoes in cream sauce
  • Rice pudding
  • Chocolate candy
  • Toffee flavored candy straws
  • Glogg
  • Ginger cookies

In addition, we listened to a good bit of Swedish music thanks to Spotify. Plus, Julie and I just saw “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” last week. And we noticed the baddie in “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol,” which we watch Monday, was Swedish.

Giving a ride

Recently, I was in Lincoln and was getting gas on Fifth Street near the old Postville Courthouse pretty late at night when a guy approached asking directions to an apartment complex. I didn’t recognize the name of it, but he said it was near Lincoln College.

I didn’t know enough of the street names to give him directions, but I told him it was pretty far across town. But he’d already walked a long way in the wrong direction after getting to town on the train.

I got to mom and dad’s, dropped off our stuff and Julie and decided to see if I could get the guy close to where he was trying to get to.

I caught up with him near College and drove him to Lincoln College. Turns out that the place he was going was way down by Hardees, though. He pointed the way and I did get him there.

I’m not sure how long he’d have been meandering around town at night on foot. I know I would have been pretty frustrated.

Memorial Day weekend

Julie’s school is out for summer as of last week, so we decided to go to Madison, Wis., for my days off to watch some of the UPA College Nationals there. We had two really good meals at Great Dane Pub and at an Afghan restaurant called Kabul. We listened to the unabridged, book-on-CD version of “Horns” by Joe Hill on the drive up and back, though we still have two discs to listen to. We were only gone two days, but we were so busy that it seemed longer.

Cut (Carleton College) scores against Florida in the UPA College Nationals championship game, Monday, May 31, 2010. Florida went on to win the game.

FLORIDA

I haven’t posted about my trip to the Orlando area yet. I had a family reunion down there. We had a couple rental houses in the Kissimmee St. Cloud area.

Besides catching up with family, we got to do some swimming in the pools, jet skiing, water skiing, video game playing, and my cousin and I played in a pickup ultimate game. A group of us went to the Orlando art museum. Mom and I went to “Star Wars: In Concert” at the Amway Center, where the Orlando Magic play.
