Quick drive to Fla.

Over the weekend, I drove 25 hours both ways, with three other guys, to play Ultimate in a hat tournament in Florida.

A friend of mine in the Ultimate community said he was planning to go and was looking for three people to go with. It seemed unlikely that I’d be able to, but my boss agreed to work for me and let me use up some vacation days.

We left Friday afternoon and drove all night, arriving a few hours before the tournament was scheduled to start. That gave us a few hours to sleep in the car. When people started showing up, we got up, checked in and grabbed some cereal that was provided, threw, and generally got ready. We eventually got our team assignments, met our teams and got to our field.

Scrat and I were on team Captain Crunch and we ended up losing the championship game at universe point, after just turning the disc over at our end zone line. We played five games plus the tournament directors had mini-games set up between rounds. Those were fun, and I learned one new game which I need to share with local players. The weather was awesome all day, too. I saw a lot of sunburns.

We got dinner with some of teammates and then checked into our hotel and cleaned up. It was funny to see the locals shivering after dinner, even though it was 60-something degrees.

The four of us wanted to do something, so we found a pool hall that served food. We spent an hour playing pool, then got some sleep.

The next morning we hit the road and drove all day, getting back to my car in Springfield around 9:30 p.m. I think I slept more than half the way back.

    Completely insane!
When you mentioned that you were in Florida I had no idea it wasn’t for a week or so!
What town did you go to? Was there a big reward for the winners? Was there any particular motivation?

Tallahassee … up in the panhandle.

I can’t remember what the winners got. It wasn’t that big.

Motivation: We were hoping for nice weather at a time when Central Illinois weather usually isn’t so great. We did get much nicer weather than Central Illinois had, but the weather up here wasn’t that bad for Central Illinois. And the opportunity to play in a tournament I’d not been to before.

And for the adventure, I guess.

That was quite an adventure 🙂 Sounds like it was a little more planned than I thought from my initial reading if you were predicting weather. I was thinking it was “week-of” spontaneity.
