Our Independence Day inspired vacation continues…
Today we got up extra early to catch a 5:30 train to the National Zoo (so that we could see the pandas having breakfast). We got there early, grabbed a Starbucks, and head into the zoo. A few animals were out, but it was still early. We walked to the back, saw some monkeys, bald eagles, and a lynx type cat of some sort while we waited for the pandas to wake up. On the way back we saw the elephants and giraffes having breakfast and by the time we made it back to the PANDAS, they were just coming out for some fresh bamboo! It was a lot of fun watching them eat.
After the zoo, we headed back to the METRO to go to the monuments. The first thing we saw when we exited the station was the White House. We didn’t sign up for the TOUR or anything, we just looked at it from the outside. Then we visited the new World War II memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Lincoln Memorial and walked by the Washington Monument (the tickets to go up in the Washington Monument were already sold out for the day though).
After the monuments, we were so tired from all that walking… but we decided to go to the Smithsonian AMERICAN HISTORY MUSEUM. We went straight to the cafeteria and re-nourished our drained bodies. One thing that really bugged me though, is that the ice cream had been replaced with gelato. I love gelato, but that is Italian, not appropriate for the American History Museum (in my humble opinion). I was also surprised to see that the STAR SPANGLED BANNER was no longer hung at the entrance (it is being preserved), but rather the Pentagon’s flag from 9/11 was on display in its place.
