Doom-da-da-DOOM

I just got back from my friends’ house. They thought they might have gotten infected by a computer virus. I thought it sounded like they had from the symptoms, namely MS Word documents changing to zip files with strange names. I went over there at 10:15 p.m. and found out that there were actually some other symptoms, too, namely JPEGs were also changing file formats.

The part that doesn’t make sense is that they only use Web mail accounts and don’t open attachments unless they are expecting something. Oh, and they tried using system restore (which I don’t totally understand, not having XP myself) and that didn’t rid them of the problems.

So I try to run their McAfee VirusScan and it won’t run. (That might be another symptom if it used to run correctly.) So do an online virus scan and find the MyDoom.f virus is on the machine. I download a program that searches for and deletes all the infected files. Turns out there are 19,000 infected files. It took about 2 hours to look it over, try a couple things, find the tools online and run everything … and restart a couple times.

They figure it might have been one of their friends who had visited in the last couple weeks and used the computer.
